TC592B: THEOLOGY AND THE ARTS PROJECT COHORT (2 Units: 85 Hours). Maria Fee.


DESCRIPTION: Building upon the theoretical foundation provided by the Theology and Arts Capstone course, this project cohort is designed to nurture the development of the students’ summative master’s projects. The master’s project is an integrative and culminating portion of the MA-WTA, MA-WMM, and MAT-TA degree programs. This project affords students an opportunity to carefully and reflectively integrate their course work with their particular areas of artistic, ministerial, and/or cultural interest.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Students who pass this course will have demonstrated that they (1) know the work of others in the integration of theology and the arts; (2) understand the range of artistic identities and vocations within the church and can articulate their own relationship to these vocations; (3) recognize theological themes and issues relating to the production of artistic and/or liturgical projects; (4) can think critically and theologically in the production of their own creative projects; and (5) are prepared to move forward in the development of a summative project or final paper.

COURSE FORMAT: This course will meet for a total of 15 instructional hours, consisting of the following: (1) professor will meet on an individual basis in one-hour increments with each student, no fewer than three times, beginning the first week of the quarter. Course meetings will involve student reports on their own reading and research, the development of their projects, and cohort feedback on projects; (2) two full-class meetings will take place the second and fourth week of the quarter for a total of 6 hours of classroom time; (3) students will present final work at the ArtVentures event, which will consist of a technical run-through as well as student presentations totaling 6 hours. Students will also use Moodle to interact regarding the progress of their projects. Credit will be given for the level participation and interaction regarding posted materials. The quality of the post is more important than the quantity.

REQUIRED READING, LISTENING, VIEWING, AND RESEARCH: In consultation with instructor, students will engage in 50 hours of approved research, preparation, and execution of their projects.

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENT:

  1. Individual meetings with instructor, class attendance and discussion. Meeting with mentors, project collaborators, and classmates to create project, and plan and execute ArtVentures event (20%) [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1, 3, 4, and 5] [15 hours].

  2. Completion of the master’s project. This includes research in action for thesis project. Students will coordinate individual readings and research components. Evolution of project will consist of sketches, models, and preliminary drafts dependent on the individual’s art medium (60%) [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1, 3, 4, and 5] [50 hours].

  3. The student will have the choice of creating either a class syllabus, the content for a workshop integrating theology and their art medium, a presentation for a conference breakout session, or content for any other educational opportunity (20%) [This assignment is related to learning outcome #1, 3, 4] [20 hours].

PREREQUISITES: TC592A.

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: Option to meet the TH5 requirement in the 120 MDiv Program. This cohort course meets the requirement for the master’s project in the TA emphasis. Option to count in the Worship and Music Ministry Emphasis, Worship, Theology, and the Arts Emphasis, and Youth, Family, and Culture emphasis.
