ST568/868: THE THEOLOGY OF WOLFHART PANNENBERG (4 Units: 172 Hours). Veli-Matti Kärkkäinen.


DESCRIPTION: This doctoral seminar, open to a limited number of advanced master’s level students, is designed to introduce students to the theology of W. Pannenberg, whose three-volume Systematic Theology is the most ambitious proposal for an all-embracing theological program for the third millennium. Pannenberg’s systematics offers a challenging discussion of all major historical, philosophical, and contemporary questions in Christian theology.

COURSE FORMAT: This class meets once per week for three-hour sessions for a total of 30 hours of classroom instruction for lecture and discussion plus 10 hours of directed learning activities for a total of 40 instructional hours. ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENT:

  1. Active participation in seminar sessions (10%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1, 3, and 4]. [30 hours].

  2. Careful preparation of class presentations, questions to facilitate discussion and consultation of recommended readings per syllabus instructions [This assignment is related to learning outcomes # 2 and 3]. [10 hours].

  3. Careful reading of assigned texts (1,090 pp.). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1, 2 and 3]. [72 hours].

  4. Two class presentation papers, each 1,500 words (30%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #2, 3, and 4]. [20 hours].

  5. Major research paper, 4,000 words (60%). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #2, 3, 4]. [40 hours].

PREREQUISITES: For master’s level students, written permission of the professor.

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: Elective. Option to meet the TH4 requirement in the 120 MDiv Program.

FINAL EXAMINATION: None.
