GM574: IGLESIA EVANGÉLICA LATINA—RETOS PARA EL FUTURO (4 Units: 161 Hours). [THE LATINO PROTESTANT CHURCH—CHALLENGES FOR THE FUTURE]. Juan Martínez.


DESCRIPTION: An analysis of the current challenges facing Latino Protestant churches in the United States and a framework for looking at the issues that they will need to address in the future. The course provides a description of the principal challenges, some of the ways that churches have responded in the past, the assets Latinos have to address the challenges, and an outline for framing the Latino church’s mission in the future.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: As objectives for the course, students will (1) understand the principal challenges faced by Latino Protestant churches in the United States today; (2) analyze the principal church models that are being used to minister in the Latino/a community; (3) evaluate their own perspectives related to Latino Protestant churches in the United States; and (4) develop plans for new models of church and ministry within the Latino community.

COURSE FORMAT: This class meets once per week for three-hour sessions for a total of 30 hours of classroom instruction for lecture and discussion plus 10 hours of directed learning activities for a total of 40 instructional hours. It will consist of lectures, discussions, and participatory activities.

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENT:

  1. 1,100 pp. of required reading. [72 hours].

  2. DLA: Interview a Latino church leader from a different tradition following instructions given on Moodle (10%) [This assignment is related to learning outcomes 2 & 3] [8 hours].

  3. Online participation, including weekly readings, reflections and assignments [100 word week forum posts and 50 words responses to 3-4 other students, depending on size of small groups.] (40%). [This weekly assignment will address each of the four learning outcomes at different times in the quarter] [15 hours].

  4. Read one book (at least 200 pages) from the class bibliography and connect it to ministry in the Latino/a community, according the instructions in the syllabus [2-3 pages] (10%). [This assignment will connect to one or several of the learning outcomes depending on the topic of the book chosen] [8-10 hours].

  5. Develop a “ministry map” of the area where the student is serving [2-3 pages] (10%) [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1 & #3] [8 hours].

  6. Analyze one of the challenges the Latino community is facing and develop a plan for how the Latino church can respond using a Practical Theology methodology [8-10 pages] (30%) [This assignment is related to learning outcomes #1 & #4] [15-18 hours].

PREREQUISITES: Spanish.
