CH502: MEDIEVAL AND REFORMATION CHURCH HISTORY (4 Units: 160 Hours). James Bradley.


DESCRIPTION: An introduction to the most important themes and people in church history and historical theology from A.D. 500 to 1600.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: (1) This course should enable Protestant students to arrive at an overall, positive appraisal of Medieval, Catholic Christianity. (2) It will enable them to understand and value the origins of their own Protestant confession by showing how the doctrines and the practices of the Reformation churches emerged in specific historical contexts. (3) Students will learn the abiding importance of the sixteenth-century controversies over Scripture, justification, the sacraments, and church and state. (4) Students will increase their critical skills in reading and writing through the study of primary source materials and composing three essays.

COURSE FORMAT: This class meets twice weekly for two hour sessions for a total of 40 instructional hours in the classroom for lecture and discussion.

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENT:

  1. 1,004 pages of assigned, required reading [This assignment is related to learning outcome # 1, 2, and 3.] [67 hours].

  2. Three 5-page analytical essays based on three classic texts from the Medieval and Reformation periods of the Church (30% of final grade). [This assignment is related to learning outcome # 4]. [30 hours].

  3. Two examinations (midterm and final, 30% and 40% respectively) covering the readings and lectures (together accounting for 70% of the grade). [This assignment is related to learning outcomes # 1, 2, and 3]. [23 hours].

PREREQUISITES: None.

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: Meets 144 MDiv core requirement in Church History “b” (CHB). Meets MAT requirement (effective Winter 2010).
