ST538: ECCLESIOLOGY: CURRENT TRENDS WORLDWIDE (4 Units: 182 Hours). Veli-Matti Kärkkäinen.


DESCRIPTION: This doctoral seminar, open to a maximum of five advanced master’s level students, studies ecclesiastical traditions and developments at the international and ecumenical level as well as ecclesiologies of some leading contemporary theologians. Special topics include mission, unity, communion, Eucharist, charisms, and the ministry of the whole people of God.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Having successfully completed this seminar, students will have demonstrated their ability (1) to articulate key developments and topics in contemporary ecclesiology and reflect on the significance of the doctrine of the church to Christian faith and church life; (2) to analyze critically main contributions and challenges of the doctrine of the church in light of tradition and recent developments; (3) to display the ability to express their own understanding of the church and her mission; and (4) to engage in constructive theology in light of the main questions of the course.

COURSE FORMAT: This class meets once per week for three-hour sessions for a total of 30 hours of classroom instruction for lecture and discussion plus 10 hours of directed learning activities for a total of 40 instructional hours.   3. Careful reading of assigned texts (1,300 pp.) [74 hours, learning outcomes # 1, 2].

  4. Two class presentation papers, each 1,500 words [20 hours, learning outomes # 2, 3, 4). (40%)

  5. Major research paper, 4,000 words [48 hours, learning outcomes # 2, 3, 4]. (60%)

PREREQUISITES: Master’s level students need written permission from the professor.

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: Elective. Option to meet the TH4 requirement in the 120 MDiv program.
