LG567: THEOLOGICAL LATIN (4 Units: 120 hours). Grant Horner.

DESCRIPTION: This course will immerse the student in the Latin language through daily readings in Classical, Biblical, Patristic, and Reformation Latin texts. Due to its intensive nature, this course will demand a much more substantial time investment than students might anticipate for a four-unit course.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of this course, students will have demonstrated the ability: (1) to parse and translate into English, with the aid of a dictionary, passages from Latin theological, historical, and literary texts; (2) to use numerous practical strategies to identify quickly the lexical form of any word they encounter in a text; (3) to employ their individual learning styles as they assimilate large amounts of new information; (4) to articulate a deeper understanding of theological terminology and a greater appreciation for the English language’s indebtedness to Latin; (5) to reader Latin actively and competently, and not merely as memorizers of innumerable grammar paradigms; (6) to accurately translate into English a passage of not less than three hundred words from a Classical, Biblical, Catholic, or Reformed text in a reasonable timeframe with the aid of a dictionary.

COURSE FORMAT: The course meets for a 2 ½ hour session twice a week for the first eight weeks of the normal ten week quarter. Varied format: lecture, demonstration, vocabulary and grammar drills, web-based digital hypertext work for lexical identification, and extensive in-class reading, parsing, and translation. This provides a total of 40 hours of classroom instruction and discussion. A total of 1600 pages of reading, approximately 80 hours outside of class.
