PM837/537: MIGRATION, TRANSNATIONALISM, IDENTITY, AND MISSION (6/4 Units). Juan Francisco Martínez.


DESCRIPTION: This is a 6-unit seminar for PhD students; at the 500-level, the 4-unit course is offered to a limited number of master's level students as approved by the professor. The seminar introduces migration theory and transnational identity formation as tools for understanding ministry among immigrants and minority communities. The seminar will place migration within a global context and help students link to Practical Theology and missiology to address the ministry context they are researching.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of this seminar students will demonstrate: (1) (cognitive) conceptual work in migration theory and the integration of ecclesiology, missiology, leadership, and particularly ministry; (2) (skills) individual skills in understanding identity formation in a transnational globalized context and social science research regarding migration; (3) (conative) vision for and commitment to understanding mission and ministry among migrants.

COURSE FORMAT: The seminar meets weekly for three hours and utilizes web-based media and interaction. Class times will include lectures, individual and group exercises, reflective discussions of materials and experiences, and student presentations.

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENT:

  1. Read assignments as scheduled; develop a 1-2 page summary of the thesis of the reading for each week and 2-3 discussion questions that will be used in class interactions. (30%)

  2. For 2 of the main textbooks, write a 600-800 word paper that summarizes the conceptual framework and works with a ministry narrative demonstrating how to apply it to mission (MDiv/MA, only 1 paper). (10% for each paper; 20% total)

  3. By week 5 select a theme for the term paper, provide a 2-page outline that includes topic/question, method, and tentative arguments/sources. (5%)

  4. Provide a class presentation related to your final paper. (10%)

  5. PhD/ThM students write a 7500-word paper; MA/MDiv students write a 3000-word paper; papers need to demonstrate competence in PT method. (35%)

PREREQUISITES: Master's level students must have permission of the professor.
