EL519: ENGLISH FOR MINISTRY. Janna McConnell.


DESCRIPTION:This 10-week noncredit course equips students with oral and aural skills to communicate in simple English within the American context of ministry. English for Ministry focuses on functional language tasks and vocabulary common to the workplace, notably church and community contexts. Through a variety of exercises that mirror authentic situations, students learn the listening and speaking skills to participate effectively.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: (1) Understand and use basic sentences for social conversation in English; (2) participate in formal and informal dialogue inside and outside class; (3) writing and giving a personal testimony; (4) use vocabulary and language functions common to church, liturgy and community contexts; (5) understand general vocabulary for Christian Education; (6) understand and translate short messages and texts into simple English; (7) understand general vocabulary for Bible Studies and devotionals

COURSE FORMAT: The course will meet once a week for three hour sessions. Students are expected to attend every class and to be in their seats in the classroom by the time class is scheduled to begin. If a student is tardy two times to class, it will equal one absence. Two unexcused absences will result in an automatic failure of the course.

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENT: This noncredit course is graded “Satisfactory” or “Not Satisfactory.” The following requirements are designed to strengthen oral and aural English skills:

  1. Class participation and preparation
  2. Group work
  3. Presentations

Assignments are usually graded by the following scale:

  1. Superior work
  2. Acceptable work
  3. Unacceptable work that needs to be redone until it is acceptable

PREREQUISITES: None.

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: Elective.

FINAL EXAMINATION: None.
