PR500: HOMILÉTICA (Homiletics). Jorge Oscar Sánchez.

DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to address the theology of preaching and the art and craft of sermon design and delivery. The nature of biblical preaching, the person of the preacher, and principles of sermon development will be discussed.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: As a result of taking this course, students will: (1) gain an intellectual understanding of preaching as a spiritual, hermeneutical, and communicative and missional task (cognitive); (2) gain greater appreciation of the preaching styles common in the Latino community and the ability to evaluate various preaching styles, including their own (affective); (3) gain the ability to develop effective sermons in a consistent manner and learn to prepare a detailed preaching plan for their church and/or ministry (skills).

RELEVANCE FOR MINISTRY: The proclamation of the Word is the foundation of Christian ministry and the primary mean of communicating the Christian message. Preaching is central for every church and especially so in the Latino church. Biblical preaching is the primary means for making disciples and strengthens the church in its mission and witness in the world.

COURSE FORMAT: The course will include both class time and practicum components. The practicum component will involve preaching two sermons (videotaped), on which students will receive feedback from fellow students and the professor. The class will meet twice weekly for two-hour sessions.
