CH847/547: HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE PENTECOSTAL & CHARISMATIC
MOVEMENTS. Cecil M. Robeck Jr.
DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to introduce students to the history of
the various Pentecostal, Charismatic, and related global "Movements of the
Spirit." Students will be guided in discussions related to a number of
historiographical, theological, sociological, anthropological, and
psychological concerns. The establishment of sources for the study of these
movements, as well as issues that range from primitivism, restorationism, and
independence to institutionalization and ecumenism will be covered.
LEARNING OUTCOMES: This course should enable students (1) to gain a sense of
the current historiographic discussions, (2) to identify historiographic
resources, (3) to identify and define the nature of various Pentecostal and
Charismatic movements, (4) to identify some of the more important relevant
themes in these movements, and (5) to understand some of the more important
regional developments.
SIGNIFICANCE FOR LIFE AND MINISTRY: Completion of this course should enable
students to
- understand the social and historical contexts out of which these movements
have emerged;
- understand and communicate the essence of these movements to the Church;
and
- engage in critical research, reflection, and writing on the subject of
Pentecostalism.
COURSE FORMAT: The course will meet on Monday afternoons for lecture,
discussion, and presentations. Students will be expected to participate in a
day-long tour of early Pentecostal sites in Los Angeles on Saturday, January
28.

ASSIGNMENTS: Students will be given assigned readings and will be expected be
present and participating in all classes. They will be asked to make a short
presentation on their paper topic, and to submit a major research paper or
project approved by the professor.
PREREQUISITES: ThM or PhD student, or advanced MA/MDiv students with CH504,
505, or 506 and written permission of the professor.
