CN552: ETICA DE LA CONSEJERIA PASTORA [Ethics of Pastoral Counseling]. Pablo Anabalón.


DESCRIPTION: This course is designed for those who wish to become more effective pastoral practitioners, by providing tools to address ethical dilemmas in the practice of pastoral counseling, particularly within the Latino context.

SIGNIFICANCE FOR LIFE AND MINISTRY: This course will challenge students to develop a theological understanding of the ethical dimension in counseling and to apply insights gained to the practice of pastoral care and counseling, particularly within the context of the Latino culture. Its purpose is to provide a solid foundation for practical pastoral ministry.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: By means of this course, students will

  1. be able to bring together theological and counseling insights from a practitioner perspective;

  2. gain tools to address such topics as the nature of pastoral care, the importance of ethics for effective pastoral care and counseling, the counselor as ethicist, issues in the professional ethics of counseling, learning from codes and guidelines of churches and professional counseling organizations, developing frameworks for Christian ethical practice, ethical problem-solving, confidentiality, continuing education of the counselor, multiple relationships, and issues of power in pastoral counseling;

  3. reflect on ethical considerations in pastoral counseling in the context of the Latino population;

  4. develop practical skills in pastoral casework from an ethical standpoint.

COURSE FORMAT: The course is interactive. It contains a combination of input from lecturer, class discussion, small group exercises, role-play, debate, private study, and collaborative presentations. The course will meet weekly for three-hour sessions.

ASSIGNMENTS AND ASSESSMENT:
  1. Attendance at all classes and participation in one team or individual presentation to class (15% of grade based on attendance and participation; 15% on presentation to class).

  2. A weekly one-to-two-page summary of the assigned reading material using the model presented in class (30%).

  3. One 4000-word essay addressing an ethical dilemma in the context of pastoral counseling (40%).

PREREQUISITES: Spanish.

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: Meets MDiv core requirement in Pastoral Counseling (MIN 5).

FINAL EXAMINATION: None.
