OT805: OLD TESTAMENT THEOLOGY SEMINAR. Mignon R. Jacobs.


DESCRIPTION: This PhD seminar is a study of the field of Old Testament theology looking at both the history of scholarship and contemporary models of theology. Its emphasis is the examination of the role of the biblical text in the task of OT theology, the intertextual dimensions and influence of Hebrew and Jewish thought as integral of OT theology.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: The Seminar is designed to facilitate the following outcomes: (1) that students acquire knowledge of the area of study; (2) that students demonstrate competency in articulating (verbal and written) the development of scholarship within the area of study; (3) that students evaluate the nature and significance of scholars' use of the Old Testament text in the construction of their ideas.

RELEVANCE FOR MINISTRY: The Seminar fosters an opportunity for students to be conversant with their theological legacy and the impact on their thoughts and that of the community.

COURSE FORMAT: This seminar will meet during three-hour weekly sessions for discussion and reports.

Course "Selected Bibliography" will be available during class session. Students may supplement but may not replace the readings.

ASSIGNMENTS: Preparation consisting of weekly reading and reports (20%); presentation and review of theological works (30%); a final paper that will be the construction of a theology based on Old Testament texts (50%). **Prior to the first meeting, students are required to read at least 250 pages and be prepared to discuss. Students may select one of the following or a combination of the following Eichrodt, Knierim, Perdue, and/or Gunneweg.**

PREREQUISITES: Survey of the OT and exegetical course in the Old Testament. Knowledge of Hebrew.
