DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to address the theology of preaching and the art and craft of sermon design, development and delivery. The nature of preaching, the person of the preacher and principles of sermon construction will be discussed.

RELEVANCE FOR MINISTRY: Proclamation of the Word is a primary means of communicating the faith. Preaching is central in the Latino church. Biblical preaching strengthens the church and its witness in the world.

COURSE FORMAT: The course will include both class time and practicum components. The practicum component will involve preaching two sermons (videotaped), on which they will receive feedback from fellow students and the professor. The class will meet twice weekly for two-hour sessions.

ASSIGNMENTS:
  1. Development and preaching of two sermons, including submission of exegetical and sermon notes.

  2. Reading of all required books and 100 pages from selected writings provided by the professor.

  3. Analysis of two sermons by well-known Latino or Latin American preachers.

  4. Weekly quiz on the topics covered in class.
Final grade will be based on professor's assessment of the sermons preached in class (40%); written assignments (40%); weekly quizzes (10%); attendance, attitude and participation in classes (10%).

PREREQUISITES: NE502. Spanish.

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: Meets MDiv core requirement in Preaching and Communication (MIN2).
