NE506: NEW TESTAMENT EXEGESIS: 1 PETER. Richard Beaton.


DESCRIPTION: The course will engage in detailed exegesis of the Greek text of 1 Peter. In addition to the historical and critical issues, we will pay special attention to the contemporary trends in the study of the book as well as its unique characteristics, theology, and life-setting. The course intends to build upon exegetical methods and solidify exegesis of the Greek text through intensive practice.

COURSE OBJECTIVES/LEARNING OUTCOMES: The course seeks to develop interpretive sensibilities in the student so that the student will be able to:


RELEVANCE FOR MINISTRY: First Peter addresses core issues of Christian identity, God's vision for a renewed community, living with a view to the Christian hope, witness, and perseverance in the face of resistance and hostility. Skillful exegesis is essential to one's understanding of the New Testament and is foundational to responsible teaching and preaching.

COURSE FORMAT: The class will meet once a week in a three-hour session.

  1. Preparation and presentation of assigned Greek passages (20%).

  2. Two short papers on exegetical/theological issues in 1 Peter (1200 words; 20% each).

  3. An exegetical paper on the Greek text of 1 Peter (2500 words; 40%).

PREREQUISITES: NE502 and NS501.

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM: Meets MDiv core requirement in New Testament Exegesis (NTE).
