CO503: ADVANCED COMMUNICATION. Douglas H. Nason. (Two Units).


DESCRIPTION:

This seminar assumes a working knowledge of the public speaking process. It is designed to further enrich student understanding of communication theory and to enlarge upon practical skills in communicating the faith.

RELEVANCE FOR MINISTRY:
Developing authentic and effective strategies of communication is central to the ministry of the church. This course is aimed at encouraging students to cultivate approaches to communication which are faithful to the gospel and contextually congruent.

COURSE FORMAT:
This course will meet once a week for two hours of lecture, discussion, and oral presentation. Time outside of class will be devoted to reading and speech preparation. Video tape will be used to record in-class performance.

REQUIRED READING:
Students will be required to do independent reading in a research area of their choice for purposes of speech development within the class. Consultation and approval by the instructor for selected reading will be required.

ASSIGNMENTS:
In addition to required reading, each student will be expected to prepare and deliver four oral presentations (written outlines will be required for two of these assignments).

PREREQUISITES:
CO500.

RELATIONSHIP TO CURRICULUM:
Elective. Meets requirement for communication in some MA in Theology programs.
