PR500: HOMILETICA (Homiletics). Juan Martínez.


DESCRIPTION:

This course is designed to address the theology of preaching and the art and craft of sermon design and delivery. The person of the preacher, the nature of preaching and principles of sermon construction will be discussed.

RELEVANCE FOR MINISTRY:
Proclamation of the Word is a primary means of communicating the faith. Preaching is central in the Latino church. Biblical preaching strengthens the church and its witness in the world. As course objectives, students will
  1. understand preaching as a spiritual, hermeneutical, communicative and missional task;

  2. analyze various understandings of the homiletical task;

  3. evaluate various preaching styles in the Latino community, including their own;

  4. develop a detailed preaching plan for their church and/or ministry.

COURSE FORMAT:
The course will include both class time and practicum components. The practicum component will involve preaching two sermons (videotaped), on which they will receive feedback from fellow students and the professor. The class will meet twice weekly for two-hour sessions.

ASSIGNMENTS:
  1. Preparation and preaching of two sermons, including submission of exegetical and sermon notes.

  2. Reading of all assigned texts and 500 from the recommended reading.

  3. Analysis of two sermons by well known Latino or Latin American preachers.

  4. Development of a series of 4-6 sermons for usage in the church community.

PREREQUISITES:
NE502. Spanish.
