DESCRIPTION:

This course is designed to develop communication skills in the preparation and delivery of spoken messages. Attention will be given to speaking situations frequently encountered in ministry: speeches to persuade, convince and inform; self-introductions; sharing of Christian experience; storytelling; and biblical messages. Emphasis will be placed on the creation and delivery of original material for presentations. Questions about voice, gesture, non-verbal communication, and speech anxiety will be addressed. The course will use video tape recording. Enrollment is limited to ten students.

To be successful in ministry, students must know what will make them more effective communicators. They must be able to make conscious communication choices that contribute to beneficial outcomes. As a result of this course, students should be able to organize and convey their thoughts in a meaningful manner that accomplishes their specific purpose for speaking.

This highly interactive class will meet once a week for two hours. Time will be spent listening to brief lectures, engaging in class discussion, delivering oral presentations, and providing feedback to classmates. Time outside of class will be devoted to actively listening to other presenters and to speech preparation. Videotapes will be used to record in-class speeches.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE OUTSIDE OF CLASS:
Listen to and outline the live presentations of three different speakers. Complete a typed, one-page analysis discussing the effectiveness of each of these presenters. Students will also watch their own videotaped speeches and write a one to two page analysis for two speeches delivered within class. Prepare for speeches to be delivered in class.

REQUIRED ASSIGNMENTS IN CLASS:
Deliver four relatively brief oral presentations in class (written outlines are required for each of these speeches). Participate in discussions, exercises, and providing feedback to classmates. Class attendance is required for all sessions and failure to attend two or more class sessions will result in a failing grade.
