DESCRIPTION: In this course students will explore the practical areas of ministry in the local church that

will help them understand their own call to serve God. We will study the call to become a pastor, the nature of pastoral ministry, and the basic tasks of the pastoral ministry. Subjects to be covered include: the theology of ministry (call, ordination, gift, and role); the nature of the church; the role of worship in the life of the church, including weddings and funerals; sermon and sacraments; leadership and the dynamics of change; healing, forgiveness, and discipleship in the church.


SIGNIFICANCE FOR LIFE AND MINISTRY: This is a core course in the Ministry Division and is recommended for students who are pursuing a call to become a pastor or staff member in a local congregation. We will study biblical material and practical examples of life, ministry, and conflict in the church.


LEARNING OUTCOMES: By the end of the course, students will have (a) gained an appreciation of their

own gifts and sense of calling to pastoral ministry; (b) gained an appreciation of the value of worship and its relationship with justice; (c) developed skills related to pastoral ministry; (d) developed an appreciation of pastoral ministry (e) gained a better understanding of the nature and tasks of pastoral leadership, (f) critically examined their own presuppositions.


COURSE FORMAT: Class room learning activities will include lectures, discussion of biblical texts, case

studies, group activities, and analyses of assigned reading. Students will be evaluated not only on their written work, but on their participation in classroom discussions as well. The class will meet for a total of 30 hours over four weekends.

        page forms). (10%)

2.   Prepare an evaluation form for three worship services (a total of 6 pages for 3 services). (10%)

3.   Three page paper on your call to ministry. (20%)

4.   Prepare one written funeral. (10%)

5.   Prepare one written wedding. (10%)

6.   Ten page paper on your personal theology of ministry due at the end of the quarter. (40%)






FINAL EXAMINATION: Final Project due at the end of the quarter.
