NS500: NEW TESTAMENT 1: GOSPELS AND ACTS. Blaine B. Charette.

DESCRIPTION: This course constitutes an introduction to the nature, structure, and message of the New Testament letters and the Apocalypse of John in their historical, literary, and canonical contexts.

SIGNIFICANCE FOR LIFE AND MINISTRY: The Gospels describe the ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth, who as Messiah and Son of God is the central figure of the New Testament and of the Christian faith. Acts continues the story into the first generation of JesusŐ followers. This course lays a foundation for understanding those documents that present and interpret the life and teaching of Jesus and the ongoing witness of the Church. Knowledge of the message of Jesus and how his first followers presented that message is essential if the Church today is to live out and communicate the gospel.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Having successfully completed this course, students will have demonstrated that they: (1) can articulate the character of the Gospels and Acts as witnesses to Jesus Christ; (2) are familiar with the historical background, content, structure, and message of each of these writings; (3) have skill in the interpretation of the Gospels and Acts as appropriate for effective leadership in Christian communities.

COURSE FORMAT: Lectures and discussions based on reading the Bible and secondary literature. Class will meet once weekly for 10 weeks, totaling 30 classroom hours.
